Map the people, routes and destinations
Start with the people using the site and the journeys they need to complete. A first-time visitor, resident, staff member, delivery driver and emergency responder may arrive from different places and use different routes. Floor plans, entry points, parking, lifts, stairs, departments and room names can be mapped into a destination hierarchy before individual signs are designed. This establishes what the system needs to explain and where each journey begins.

Audit decisions and build a location schedule
A site walk tests the plan against the real environment: sightlines, competing information, lighting, obstructions, mounting surfaces and the points where someone must choose a direction. Each proposed location can then be recorded with its audience, message, sign type, fixing and site condition. That location schedule gives designers, stakeholders, fabricators and installers one coordinated reference and exposes missing or duplicated directions before production.

Create a clear naming and message hierarchy
Destination names should be consistent across maps, directories, directional signs, doors and operational communications. At each location, the message is reduced to what a person needs for the next decision, with typography, arrows, colour and symbols organised around viewing distance and information priority. This avoids turning every sign into a full directory and makes later changes easier to control across the complete family.

Resolve accessibility and compliance in context
Legibility, contrast, mounting position, tactile and Braille information, statutory requirements and circulation paths need to be considered against the users and the actual building. Requirements vary by sign type and site, so accessibility and compliance inputs should be identified within the project scope and reviewed against the relevant documentation. Coordinating mandatory signs with the wider wayfinding family helps them remain clear without feeling disconnected from the environment.

Prototype, document and plan the rollout
Key sign types can be tested at representative locations before the full package is released. Samples, artwork schedules, material and finish specifications, fixing details and message registers establish the approved standard. Installation planning then accounts for live-site access, staged areas, removal of superseded signs, making good and closeout records. The result is a maintainable system rather than a collection of one-off signs.

Navigation delivered across 37 Bolton Clarke care centres.Delivered in just over a year, the rollout covered more than 2,000 signs in Victoria and New South Wales.
