Resolve frontage and sightlines
Start with the approach to the site: traffic direction, viewing distance, speed, landscaping, parked vehicles, neighbouring signs and the point where a driver needs to decide. A useful site survey records the available sign zone and likely obstructions before height, width or message volume is fixed. This helps the design prioritise identification and direction without asking one structure to carry more information than people can read.

Classify the sign and plan the approval path
The sign type, message, location, illumination and site context influence the planning and documentation path. Requirements vary by site and responsible authority, so the proposed pylon or monolith should be classified against the actual address and scope before manufacture. Coordinate services, structure and footings
Existing underground services, soil and pavement conditions, sign loads, footing geometry, drainage, electrical supply and access for excavation all affect the buildable solution. Survey information and engineering inputs need to connect before the footing is released. That coordination reduces avoidable conflicts at the frontage and gives the fabricator and installer a defined structure, fixing method and sequence for the actual site.

Set the tenant and message hierarchy
Multi-tenant pylons need a deliberate order for centre identity, major tenants, directional information and changeable panels. Panel sizes, typography, contrast and illumination should be set around real viewing conditions, while replacement access is considered from the outset. If a digital display is proposed, content zones, power, controls, brightness strategy and service access become part of the same site-specific design rather than a separate add-on.

Plan access, safety and maintenance
Installation planning covers delivery vehicle position, lifting or access equipment, public and traffic separation, site operating hours and the sequence between excavation, structure, electrical work and sign installation. The same review should test how faces, lighting components or digital equipment will be reached later. A maintainable sign protects the frontage investment and avoids creating a service task that the site cannot safely support.
